Hundreds of Columbia area children takew swimming lessons every year. Swimming is proving to be an important life skill, the Medical University of South Carolina reports drownings are the second leading cause of unintentional, injury-related death in children under the age of 14.
Midlands YMCA's are encouraging parents to have thier kids dive in at an early age by offering swim classes at half price.
"It's crucial we get as many kids in the water as we can," says Christian Simensen, head of the Jeep Rogers Family YMCA's aquatics program.
He says the new YMCA initiative is to make sure children can "enjoy lakes and pools and things like that and still be safe while they're doing it."
Registration for the YMCA's swim classes begin May 17th. For more information visit columbiaymca.org.
