USC's leadoff man Reese Havens continued his stellar performance this season going 3 for 4 against Furman, but it wasn't enough for the Gamecocks.
Havens's leadoff homerun in the first gave USC the early lead, and his stellar performance looked like it might have been enough early on.
USC added another run in the third inning on a Furman throwing error, but that's where the trouble started for the Gamecocks.
Furman pulled two runs back in the fourth on an almost identical error.
USC's starter Nick Godwin was shaky, giving up seven hits through six innings but only allowing one earned run.
Despite some suspect pitching from both teams, the score remained tied until the eighth when Craig Thomas and Curtis Johnson combined to give up a 2 run inning.
The rally was capped when Furman's Bobby Hubbard hit a two run double to the wall in right.
USC rallied furiously in the ninth, but was denied after James Darnell and Justin Smoak lined out sharply. Losing the game 4 to 2.
USC will look to get back on track Wednesday night against College of Charleston. The game starts at 7 PM at Sarge Frye Field.
