The National Retail Foundation says more than two dozen brands of cosmetics and other over-the-counter drug store products have been stolen from stores and are now showing up online. It says those stolen cosmetics could be a health hazard for people who buy them.
The Food and Drug Administration sets strict regulations to control quality of cosmetics, but many websites don't regulate the sale of over-the-counter drugstore products. .
Buying stolen cosmetics online could be dangerous because many of them need to be stored in controlled environments. Products could melt and become tainted, irritating the skin.
"What people don't realize, is if they order something online, there's no telling where in the world it comes from," said Joseph Dipiro, University of South Carolina's Dean of Pharmacy.
Dipiro reccomends online shoppers who find it more convienient to shop online for their cosmetics buy straight from the manufacturer.
"The problem with Ebay is its from many different sources. If the source is a legitimate distributer, then that can be okay. You're taking a chance if it's from an unknown company."
