Columbia Intersections are Ranked the Most Dangerous in South Carolina
Dangerous Intersection in Columbia on Ft. Jackson Blvd.
Everyday driving in Columbia may seem easy, but a recent report from the South Carolina State Highway Office show that the six most dangerous intersections in South Carolina are here in Columbia.
The most accidents last year happened at I20 at Broad River Road where 11 people were hurt in 39 accidents.
The famous Malfunction Junction, an intersection which causes a lot of confusion for drivers, as they merge over several lanes of traffic had the fewest car accidents out of the six intersections with only 31 wrecks.
The intersection US 76 and Fort Jackson Boulevard ranks second in the number of accidents in Columbia.
The SC State Highway Office says that South Carolina collisions have risen almost 4% percent in the last four years with half of the wrecks occurring at intersections. Highway officials say that the main reasons for car accidents come from driving to fast.
National studies found that adding turning lanes and changing traffic signal timing could help to reduce the number of accidents.
To solve the problem the State Highways Safety officials decided to adopt a plan to make intersections less dangerous. For more information about this plan visit the State HighwaysSafety web site.
