The manager of This Is It! Video store shook a jar of raffle tickets Tuesday in preparation for her Valentine’s Day giveaway, a gift bag filled with lotions, toys and miscellaneous knick-knacks.
For the novelty sex shop on Two Notch Road, Valentine’s Day is the most lucrative day of the year.
“We’re really busy at Christmas and then the month inbetween we’re slow,” said This Is It! manager Latoya Davis. “Then Valentine’s day we’re usually bringing in about $2,500 a day.”
Despite the stigma surrounding adult novelty shops, they do well on Valentine’s Day because of the close connection between love and sex in today’s society.
This Is It! runs a raffle for customers who spent at least $50 on the holiday. Other novelty shops also advertise Valentine’s specials.
“Today’s probably our biggest day of the whole year,” said Sugar ‘n Spice Lingerie owner Pat Irons. “We do good on Christmas but we don’t do as much, I guess, because most of our shoppers at Christmas time, you’re having to buy for the children and Aunt Jane and Grandma, but for Valentines, you’re just buying for your sweetie.”
Sugar ‘n Spice, which has been in business for 36 years in Columbia, offered a special 50% off on certain merchandise in its store.
Davis said her shop attracts a variety of customers, although some are moving online to make purchases.
“The daytime customer is going to be the older white male and they’re usually coming to get DVDs or magazines,” she said. “At night, you’re going to find your 20-year-old male or female and they’re going to buy a large variety”
At Sugar ‘n' Spice Lingerie, customers range in age from 25 to 80, Irons said.
“This store here is probably a little different,” she said. “We don’t sell the porn movies and we don’t sell the magazines and stuff in here, but we do sell some toys and lotion and anatomically shaped candy and things like that, but we tried to keep this store where a couple can come in and be comfortable.”
Irons says that oftentimes, men come in the store and find it suitable for them to recommend their wives to come in and shop.
