There are many challenges that come with owning a small business, but one Columbia taco shop seems to have found the perfect recipe for success.
Among a sea of struggling small businesses, The White Duck Taco Shop on Whaley Street is thriving.
The White Duck opened its doors last February, and owners say they've had tremendous success since then. After opening restaurants in Asheville and Charleston, owner Ben Mixon felt that Columbia was the next logical step. The White Duck serves up over 15 different tacos and specials that change daily, giving Columbia diners reason to keep coming back for more.
While there's no one size fits all plan for a successful small business, District Administrator of Small Businesses Elliot Cooper says there are certain keys to success.
"Build a good business plan and stick to it. And you've got to constantly revise it because things change, products change, locations change. You've gotta give fair and good service," Cooper said.
White Duck General Manager Kurt Henry believes they have all three, but thinks that their ability to serve the needs and wants of the community truly sets them apart.
"You know trying to cater to different demographics within Columbia from military, to law enforcement, to business people, to college students," Henry said.
The ability to easily adapt to changing trends is one advantage that small restaurants have over larger chains. During a time where fresh is best and local products are expected, the White Duck seems to have exactly what customers are looking for.
After a year of success in Columbia the White Duck is moving north, and will open their sixth location in Greenville later this year.
