The holiday season is here and small businesses in Columbia are setting up for the holiday shoppers. Larger retail stores are more popular at this time, but small businesses look forward to the success holiday season brings to their stores. Customers are beginning to spend with the passing of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday.

Martha Studstill, the owner of Uptown Gifts, a small business on Main Street that focuses on personalization of items. She says that the end of the year is important and also critical for her businesses success.

“The fourth quarter is a critical time for every business and particularly for small business, probably I would say about 40 percent of our sales are made in the fourth quarter and the bulk of those are in late November and before December 25 as you might imagine so it’s a critical time for us,” says Studstill.

She’s not the only one looking forward to the overload of customers expected to hit the market. Taylor Polhemus is a stylist from Bevello, a clothing store on Forest Drive. She says that business is about to pick up the speed, as we get closer to Christmas.

“Black Friday was crazy, its been a little bit quitter now as people step away from black Friday but as we get closer to Christmas things are going to start picking up again,” says Polhemus.

For most small businesses, lunchtime typically brings in the rush of people, but the holidays change everything around.

“Holiday season changes things a little bit much because that’s our busiest time of the year, so people are shopping more and shop during the day more,” says Studstill.

So if you’re looking to personalize something or grab a new outfit this year, one of these places may be your next stop.
