St. Patrick's Day in Columbia's Five Points is more than just wearing green and drinking beer. It's one of the biggest celebrations in the country. Almost 40,000 people come to celebrate each year.
The St. Patrick's Day planning committee has been hard at work for almost seven months to plan the day's events. Five Points Association Director Amy Beth Franks says that attendees can expect a lot during the day.
"We'll start the day off at 7:30 a.m. with a 10k/5k family fun run," Franks said. 'We'll then move into the parade which is free for viewing on Devine Street starting at 10 a.m. We then have the kids area starting at 10 in MLK park and then the festival and live music are all day, ending at 7pm."
The Columbia police department will also be gearing up for the holiday to help with traffic control and provide additional safety security.
