Chocolate truffles are a standard Valentine's Day treat, but have you ever thought about complementing your sweets with something bitter?

Couples and friends came enjoyed a surprising combination: chocolate and beer Thursday at Whole Foods on Devine Street. The tasting was hosted by South Carolina Girls Pint Out, a beer organization for women.

Organizers carefully paired different beers and chocolates together to make delectable combinations. There were four rounds of beer and chocolate samples. The crowd favorite was the Sierra Nevada Otra Vez beer paired with the Alter Ego Sea Salt Truffles.

"I made a lot of friends, drank a lot of beer, and ate a lot of chocolate, so I can't complain," said Sophia Krysa, a USC student who came out to the event.

The tasting sold out all 28 seats, which was exciting for April Blake, with South Carolina Girls Pint Out. She said they usually continue to sell tickets at the door for events.

"The fact we sold out beforehand is great because we've found Columbia is a little bit slack and they like to kind of buy tickets at the last minute, which I kind of understand," says Blake, with a laugh.

Girls Pint Out is a women's beer organization with chapters all over the nation. They are dedicated to building a community of women who love craft beer, diminishing the stereotype it is only for men.

"Girls can drink wine, that's fine. But there's also a group of girls, smart ones like us, that like beer. And so, whenever we're at the bar, we shouldn't be passed over. We know what we like to drink and we don't need to be passed to Smirnoff," said Jodi Bonig, with Girls Pint Out leader.

Girls Pint Out advertises all of their events through social media. To find out what they're doing next, you can visit their Facebook page or follow them on Twitter.
