As the Gamecock women's basketball team prepares for next season, Aleighsa Welch is preparing for an exciting next chapter in the WNBA.

Welch says she is giving this opportunity everything she has.

"I just wanted to be remembered as someone who, by the end of practice their jersey was drenched in sweat and you could come in the game and see me giving everything I got," said Welch.

That mentality has worked for Welch during her time with the Gamecocks.  She led her team to their first ever Final Four tournament appearance and she's the first Gamecock to be drafted professionally under Gamecock's head coach Dawn Staley.

"Hopefully a lot of South Carolina fans will become Chicago Sky fans," she said.

Welch was also the first big in-state recruit to play for the Gamecocks. Welch graduated from Goose Greek High School.

And just like the transition from high school to college, Welch says she's excited for the change.

"To step into a new environment, to head into Chicago, somewhere I've never been before. It's something I'm looking forward to. You know it's just kind of not knowing what to expect. Not knowing what the first day of camp is going to be like," she said.

And though she'll be missed by fellow teammates like close friend Tiffany Mitchell, the team and their fans know she'll bring the same "Lisa Welch" toughness to the Windy City.
