Governor Nikki Haley's domestic violence task force is tackling South Carolina's long-standing problem of criminal domestic violence as for the first time Tuesday.

South Carolina has consistently had one of the highest numbers in the nation of women killed by men. The state has been ranked in the top ten every year since 2000. During those fifteen years, the Palmetto State has claimed the number one spot three times. The state currently ranks number two in the nation.

Haley brought together a group of state legislators, law enforcement agents, and advocates from the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. The task force also includes former victims of domestic violence, such as Elizabeth Gray.

"I always questioned God, you know, why is this happening to me?" said Gray.

She said she now knows it was so that she could advocate for victims like her.

The task force outlined its plan to take on the issue in four steps:

  • collecting information
  • identifying problems and solutions
  • implementing proposals
  • assessing the results

"We've got to change the culture if we're really going to make this fix," Haley said.

Haley added she hopes to see some results within a year, but the kind of results she wants to see will be a long-term process.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, contact the South Carolina Department of Social Services for help.
