By: Destiny Chance Erica Ruth has been styling hair for over four years. She's always worked at other salon owners' shops, until her mother had a stroke in September of 2013. While taking care of her mother, Erica started planning out ways to work from home. She opened Natural Beauty Studio a couple months later. Erica and her husband gutted their garage and turned it into a hair salon. Erica says it took about five weeks to complete, and cost her about $1500.
Erica says she and her husband were inspired to start the project from the television network HGTV.
"Transitioning from working underneath someone to being her own boss has it's perks," Erica says. While she works, her husband watches the three children they have. Erica says she go get a snack in the kitchen, be near her husband, and simply sleep where she works.
"I have roughly 100 clients that come to my home to get their hair styled," Erica says. Erica says she is able to multi-task and book clients thanks to the website Styleseat.com. Her clients can book their appointment and hold their appointment time with their debit/credit card.
"If a client doesn't show up to their appointment, they are charged to their card. This assures that no time is being wasted," Erica says. Dominique Hamm has been coming to Natural Beauty Studio for a few months. She says she never had her hair done from someone's home before, but wasn't opposed to the idea.
"I encourage future clients to judge not from the outside of Erica's home, but rather the work she does for her clients and the happiness on their faces," Dominique says.
Erica has started a spring client referral special for new and existing clients. She says she hopes this brings in even more business and expands the brand Natural Beauty Studio.
