When you feel sick, your first thought is probably to take medicine or to see a doctor. But one business in Columbia hopes to maximize your health by adjusting your lifestyle before you get sick.
9 year old Jonathan goes to a chiropractor at Maximized Living twice a week to get adjusted. His grandmother says she first brought him to try and help his allergies. Two years later, she says she has seen a huge difference.
"He has gone from taking six allergy shots a week down to none," said Vivian Hopkins, Jonathan's grandmother.
Doctor Sarah Losby says people usually wait until they have symptoms to see a doctor. She says while medications may make the symptoms go away, the patient won't actually be better until they find the cause.
"So the first place we look when we meet patients whether its asthma, allergies, high blood pressure, neck pain, sciatica, we'll go right back to looking at the spine because the spine is designed to surround and protect that system and there is a normal position for it and it has to be that way for a person to stay healthy," said Dr. Losby.
People of all ages come to Dr. Losby to get adjusted from newborns to the elderly. But is it safe for children to be adjusted so young?
"I think when people think of chiropractic and kids they think more of old school chiropractic where its manipulation, cracking, twisting, back pain and headaches versus chiropractic care that's designed to just honor how the body works and keep the spine in proper condition so you can keep your body healthy for a lifetime," said Dr. Losby.
Hopkins says she understands some people's concerns with Jonathan being adjusted at a young age but says with the results she has seen, she has no plans for him to stop.
