It may seem like a cruel April fools joke, but starting this Saturday USC students will no longer be able to park in the parking lot on the corner of Blossom and Park Street closest to the Coliseum. USC will close the lot to start construction on a new student housing complex.

Many students are upset about this new lack of parking. One student Jessica Lang speaks out saying there already isn't enough parking spots for students.

"Parking is just so awful. I just got here and I went through the other lot and there was nothing open, so I came over here and there's nothing like always," she says.

Students and faculty with "S", "N", "Z", "GS" and "CS" parking decals will be able to park in the Discovery Garage behind the Koger Center for free until May 11.

Lang doesn't think this is a solution to the lack of parking at USC.

"What about the people who already park in Discovery. Now we're taking their spots, and where are they supposed to go. That's what infuriates me," she says.

Faculty who park in the front lot will be assigned new spots in the second lot, taking more spots away from students. Parking services says there are about 500 spots in the Discovery garage that haven't been reserved.

The USC spokesman Wes Hickman did not comment, but a parking services employee Ralph Rawls is handing out flyers in the front lot explaining the changes to come.

He says the reactions are mixed so far, but more people are upset about the changes.

"I think some of the students felt like it was coming. They were expecting this. Some of them had the look of disgust on their face, some were like 'OK whatever," he says.

Faculty and staff who now park in the closed lot will be able to park in the lot near the Colonial Life Arena or move to the Discovery garage this coming fall. But students are expected to buy spots in any of the parking garages around campus.
