Loss prevention is a set of practices employed by companies to preserve profit. Retailers can lose millions of dollars each year through shoplifting, theft and missing inventory. The thefts not only cost them money, they also mean higher prices for other customers.
2 G's, in Columbia's 5 Points, specializes in women's clothing, and store manager Carol Hilton says when her store had a theft theft, she had no idea what she could have done to stop it.
"The time that I had it happen where I know for sure it happened, it had already happened before I realized it," Hilton says.
Bernard Brown is the Director of Loss Prevention for Belk in Atlanta and he says the key for smaller stores to avoid theft and maintain loss prevention skills is easier than they think.
"Customer service has and will always be the best deterrent for preventing loss and shrinkage in our stores or any stores... so good customer service will go a long way," Brown says.
Hilton agrees, and is confident that she'll pay more attention to each customer as they come in.
