Runners beware. If you're heading out for a workout, make sure you're wearing proper footwear.
Just ask Christina House. She's been an avid runner for seven years, but was recently injured while training for the upcoming Columbia Marathon. The reason, she said, was improper footwear.
"My shoes were kind of worn out, kind of old," House said. "So when I was running, I stepped on something and broke something in my foot."
House's injury is not uncommon for runners. The American College of Sports Medicine reports 74 percent of runners suffer some sort of running injury each year.
Fleet Feet owner Toni Jumper said having the proper shoe can help prevent some of these injuries such as stress fractures, lower leg soft tissue damage, and neck injuries.
"When customers come in," Jumper said, "we analyze the feet, watch them walk and based on the foot function, match their needs to a shoe."
Now that House is aware of the dangers of improper footwear, she is more careful about the shoes she wears when running. Once fully recovered, she plans to begin training for the Seattle Marathon in June.
