Bobby Haney poses with a young fan that came out to buy the bookBy: Cameron Widerman
Bobby Haney is no longer just turning double plays. The former Gamecock shortstop is now making readers turn pages. Haney recently wrote, "From Kings Park to Omaha," a book about his baseball experiences, including the first Gamecock baseball national championship in 2010.
"I was inspired by the national championship," Haney says, "And to tell the little young kids about my life story"
The book is geared towards kids but it hasn't stopped older fans from buying the book. Gamecock alumnus Carl Cantrell already read the book and came out to buy one for a friend. Cantrell says his favorite part is reading about the behind the scenes moments.
"[Haney] found his locker one day in the shower with all his equipment and everything taped up," Cantrell says, "I thought that was a good initiation story."
Haney says that the same players that gave him that initiation were shocked to hear he was writing a book.
"They were like ‘Wow you're writing a book? You gotta be kidding me!' but Coach Tanner couldn't believe it either," he said.
Head Baseball Coach Ray Tanner has read most of the book.
"Bobby was a electric energy guy when he was here has a lot of fun and he has expressed himself a little bit in the book," Tanner said.
Haney says he just hopes the book inspires kids to shoot for their dreams by working hard.
He added that there might be a sequel if he makes it to the major leagues. Haney will be at the San Francisco Giants spring training in Arizona. He spent last season with the Augusta Greenjackets, the Giants Minor League affiliate.
