I used to be a babysitter's worst nightmare, the dreaded first-grader with too many questions and too much energy. Luckily, asking lots of questions and having lots of energy are both useful for journalism.
I grew up in North Carolina, and after writing for my high school newspaper, I realized my passion for the one profession that allows someone to explore any question they have – journalism. Although UNC had an outstanding journalism program, an academic scholarship led to my becoming a Gamecock.
Now, I'm 21 and a senior and I feel like my life is just beginning. Journalism has allowed me to find a place in the world, form my own opinions and express myself in ways that have prepared me for new experiences.
I enjoy political reporting as well as feature writing, and I want to cover politics for a newspaper or work on a political campaign. I began to follow politics heavily in my sophomore year of college and was an intern in Sen. Jim DeMint's Columbia office for nine months.
I think that sometimes it is easy for people to ignore politics or assume elections will not affect them personally. I hope my writing will help others make informed decisions and develop their own opinions concerning politics.
The future is never a sure thing, but the one constant in my life has always been my passion for writing. I look forward to traveling, learning new things and answering some questions of my own.
