I did not have to travel far to attend college. South Carolina has been home all my 22 years. Now, with graduation near, my next step is to find a job as a sportswriter, which may mean leaving South Carolina behind.

I've always loved to watch sports, but then I began writing for my high school paper and realized how great it was to watch an event and tell others what happened.

Before I started writing, I would just tell my parents about the games, but now my classmates and teachers wanted to know how the football team was doing, and our paper gave them that information.

Since then, I've learned that so much more goes into a great sports story than simply watching a game and reporting what happened. The research, preparation and planning before ever writing surprised me at first, but now I appreciate great stories even more because I can tell how much effort went into them.

I'm still learning how to find the most interesting, unexpected stories.. Journalism is a great opportunity to learn about things I otherwise would have never known and then share that information with other people.

While almost all my experience has been in sports, I'm excited about working for The Carolina Reporter and having the chance to cover topics I have not done before.
