Mallory Cage:Perseverance and Preservation

I've moved around the Southeast my whole life, but I now call North Carolina home. I'm 21, but have known I wanted to be a journalist since I was 15 and joined my high school's yearbook staff.

There I fell in love with telling people's stories.

For me, journalism has always been a way to give people answers. I love being up to date on current events, but even more I love taking information and making it understandable and relevant.

I started preserving the events of my life in scrapbooks before I was even a teenager and now I want to record the history of other people's lives. Journalism also allows me to continue to document history, as it has almost always intersected with and recorded the most important moments in our society.

In five years, I hope to be involved in sports media, whether it's recording athletic achievements and obstacles at a major magazine like Sports Illustrated, combining words with video at ESPN or using my journalism skills with what I've learned in my business minor to move through sports marketing.

I have always loved sports. I played on many teams when I was young and joined the USC swim team my freshman year. For me, it isn't just about the championships or losses, but about the athletes and the story behind each one.

What I've learned, though, is I can't be afraid to try - to try to get the best story, leave the truth for future generations and make the biggest impact I can.
