Connor Shaw rushes for a touchdown against Clemson during second quarter action on Saturday.By: Dustin Martin
Sophomore quarterback Connor Shaw went into Saturday's game against Clemson with growing confidence over the second half of the 2011 season. After replacing often-troubled Stephen Garcia against Kentucky, Shaw has progressed from what some called a 'game manager,' to the leader of the Gamecocks offense.
His leadership led South Carolina to their third consecutive victory over the Tigers and their second 10 win season in school history.
"I feel like my confidence is boosting the more I play game by game," Shaw said. "I think I have a better feel for the game, and I'm starting to see the bigger picture."
Shaw earned SEC Co-offensive player of the week honors with his performance after completing 14 of 20 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 107 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown.
Head coach Steve Spurrier was pleased that the offense finally played a balanced game against the Tigers.
"Offensively we did enough good things here and there to run for over 200 yards and pass for the exact (same) amount," Spurrier said after the game. "That's sort of our formula for winning."
Spurrier also praised Shaw for his performance and his growth throughout the season.
"He played with no turnovers, no interceptions. That was huge. He doesn't have very many stupid plays. He's gained confidence," Spurrier said.
Now the Gamecocks await their bowl opponent and Connor Shaw awaits yet another chance to make Gamecock history by helping this year's team win 11 games for the first time ever.
