Columbia Blowfish May Have To Relocate

The Columbia Blowfish baseball team may soon have to find a new home.  The city says an Atlanta based company is interested in buying the city-owned property the stadium sits on, reportedly to turn it into a shopping center.  Some people say the old stadium is an eyesore that needs to go while others don't want to see the 80-year-old landmark torn down.

Blowfish owner Bill Shanahan said he had not heard the stadium might be sold. There has been talk of building a new baseball stadium on the grounds of the old state hospital on Bull Street.  Shanahan says if the sale of Capital City Stadium helps move the city to build a new field it would be a positive thing.

One possibility for the Blowfish is to have them play in USC's new Carolina Stadium.  The Gamecocks' home season starts in mid- to late February, and usually ends no later than mid-June.  USC Athletics spokesman Steve Fink says there has been no conversations about the Blowfish playing in Carolina Stadium.

The Blowfish web site says the team still plans to play in Capital City Stadium in 2012.
