USC students got a chance to improve their grocery shopping habits Tuesday.   About a dozen students went to the Publix on Rosewood to take the grocery store tour led by USC dietitian Deborah Zippel.

"A lot of students really don't have the concept of how to eat healthy and it really does start in the grocery store," Zippel said.

The tour, sponsored by the USC wellness center, emphasized healthy eating. Zippel gave tips on how to navigate the store and learn about the products on the shelves.

Tips given by Zippel included:

  • Shop the perimeter of the store where fresh and natural foods are
  • Read nutrition labels and pay attention to the first ingredient listed
  • Stick to lean meats
  • Whole grains are essential
  • Buy local, fresh food

Students on the tour walked away with different lessons, all with the goal of eating healthier.

"I learned that for every 100 calories you're supposed to have 3 grams of fat," Kelly Harkins said.

"The coolest fact of the day is whenever you take a shot of liquor it's similar to taking a shot of butter," Chris Knight said.

The next grocery store tour will be on April 14.
