Gamecock athletes beat a record last fall, but it wasn't on the playing field. They achieved the best overall grade point average in USC history.  The 2010 Fall Report Card released last week revealed the overall GPA for USC athletes is 3.146.

Advisors give credit for the increase to the Dodie Anderson Academic Enrichment Center.

"They know they can come in here, they can work, they can find a quiet area if they need it. If they need a tutor or mentor the resources are here," Maria Hickman, Associate Director of Academic Services, said.

The Dodie, as it's called, was open for its first full semester last fall. Athletes were able to take full advantage of its services.

Most athletes eat breakfast and dinner at the Dodie and they are required to attend a number of study halls.

Women's teams scored the three highest GPA's. The highest was the women's golf team with a 3.568 average. Hickman was not surprised by this fact.

"Sometimes I think women just get it a little quicker. Once they get here the want to do well and they're more concerned with academics," Hickman said.
