South Carolina Governor-elect Nikki Haley named former U.S. Ambassador to Canada, David Wilkins, as the head of her transition team, David Wilkins.
"I believe in Nikki Haley. I believe she's the right person at the right time to lead our state," says Ambassador David Wilkins.
Wilkins was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives for 25 years and Speaker of the House for over a decade. President George W. Bush named him the US Ambassador to Canada in 2005, a post he held until the end of the Bush administration.
Some Haley opponents were critical of the fact she had served only six years in the state legislature. They say having someone as experienced as Wilkins is something the Haley administration needs.
Wilkins and Haley will choose people who will run key South Carolina government agencies.
Some have already been named. Tim Pierson will be Executive Director of the Transition Team, Rob Godfrey has been named press secretary, and Swathy Patel will serve as legal council.
"You will see us working to find the most aggressive team, the most creative team, and the most talented team," says Haley.
Haley also said the goal between now and Inauguration day is to put in place a transition team that will set a clear and successful path for her administration and for South Carolinians.
