Republican Tim Scott won South Carolina's First District congressional race and will be the state's first black Republican congressman in more than a century.  He will also be the first black Republican to serve in the US House of Representatives since 2003.

Scott won in 344 of 398 precincts in his Charleston area district, taking 86 percent of the votes.

Scott greeted a few hundred supporters at his victory party in North Charleston Tuesday night.  He spoke about his plans to work to repeal the federal health care law and reigning in Washington spending.

Scott, 45, has grown accustomed to breaking barriers. He became the first black Republican on Charleston County Council in 1995.
