The seventeenth ranked South Carolina women's soccer team had a chance to clinch the SEC regular season title but lost to the eighth ranked Florida Gators Friday night 1-0 on a penalty kick. Florida senior Nicky Kits scored the only goal of the game with only two seconds left in the first half.
This is the Gators fifth consecutive SEC regular reason title. The Gamecocks will now take the second seed in the SEC Tournament, next week. This is the highest SEC finish for the Gamecocks ever.
This game was also senior night for the Gamecocks where they recognized Brittiny Rhoades, Brooke Jacobs, Maddy Kill, and Maggie Blackwell. These girls have led the Gamecocks to the programs best four years with a record of 58-21-11.
Kayla Grimsley ends the regular season leading the SEC in goals (11), points (31), and game-winning goals.
South Carolina takes on Kentucky in the SEC Tournament next Wednesday at 12 noon. The Gamecocks beat the Wildcats during the regular season 5-1.
