The doughnut burger is the newest food attraction at the South Carolina State Fair this year.
Sheryl Reese and her husband fry up fresh burger patties everyday, then slap it between two hot Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Diners can add cheese or bacon, and then they can add lettuce, tomato, onions, mayonnaise, mustard, or ketchup.
"Actually we heard about it here from Hugh, our meat man," says Sheryl Reese. "He had seen them out at a baseball stadium out in St. Louis out near an Air Force Base, and they were selling them. And he told us about it, and we thought that was kinda weird, you know? So we didn't do anything for about five years and then we started hearing about it on Man vs. Food and Paula Dean on the Food Network and just all different stories. And we started doing it, and it has just been a big hit,"
Reese says the doughnut burger originated when R&B singer-songwriter Luther Vandross ran out of hamburger buns. The story goes that the only thing Vandross had to use as buns was a doughnut. Because of this, the burger is sometimes referred to as "the Luther Burger".
