Auto mechanics say changing the oil is the single most important thing you can do to prolong the life of your car. Some USC students are confused about how long they can go between oil changes.
"Well, the sticker says every 3,000 miles, but my dad always told me I only have to go every 4 or 5," said USC student Julie Williams.
Redmond Automotive mechanic Louis Chapman says how often you change your oil is determined by several things.
"In town driving, stop and go requires it to be done a lot sooner, verses highway driving you can stretch it out to six or seven thousand miles," said Chapman.
Chapman says the main thing to look for when choosing a motor oil that lasts longer is whether or not it is synthetic. He says that with synthetic motor oils you can go a lot longer distances between oil changes.
