The USC softball team fell 4-3 to Coastal Carolina in Joyce Compton's last home game as the coach of the Gamecocks.
USC almost made it a story book ending. USC cut the lead from three runs down to one with a Laura Mendes 2-run homer late in final inning, but a ground out and foul out closed the door on the Gamecocks.
The team presented Coach Compton with 24 roses, one for each year she has been in charge of the softball team, after the tame. Compton compiled a 427-136-1 record in her tenure at South Carolina.
The Gamecocks will close the season with two SEC series on the road against Georgia and Florida. First there's a doubleheader on Saturday in Athens with the first pitch is at 1:00 p.m. followed by a single game Sunday. The Gamecocks then have a week off before ending the season with a three-game series in Gainesville starting on May 8.
