The South Carolina softball celebrated its first SEC win of the 2010 season on Saturday, but couldn't conjure enough runs on Sunday to win the final conference home stand for head coach Joyce Compton.

USC (11-33, 1-21) gave the home fans reason to celebrate Saturday, however. Sophomore Caitlin Westfall's three-run homer in the fourth led the Gamecock offense. Childs and freshman Hannah Milks were a combined 6-for-6 at the plate as South Carolina defeated the Bulldogs (24-24, 5-15) 8-4.

Compton, who announced Saturday that she would retire at the end of this season, was pleased with her team's performance.

"We haven't seen this team show up since the first week of the season," Compton said, "We've been looking for this all year."

Junior first baseman Laura Mendes went 2-for-4 with a double and scored the Gamecocks lone run Sunday as South Carolina fell to Mississippi State 3-1. Sophomore Evan Childs brought Mendes in to score with an RBI single in the fifth.

Junior April Borchardt (4-4) pitched a complete game on both Saturday and Sunday, picking up a win and loss, respectively, to even her record. The injury and suspension-plagued Gamecocks needed a long outing, with only two pitchers available behind her.

Mississippi State's Misty Flesher (11-8) held South Carolina to only one run off six hits in a complete game to get the win.

Compton will coach her final game at Beckham Field Wednesday night as USC takes on Coastal Carolina at 6pm.
