Columbia activists are teaming up this week to try to stop violence in the Midlands with Youth Violence Prevention week.

Harmony Youth Group director Michael Meyers stressed that the key to keeping children out of trouble is parent involvement, at a "Truth and Consequences" youth forum in Hyatt Park.

"There's a distance between parents and the adults whether it may be mom, dad, sisters, uncles and aunts," he said.

The meetings this week welcome any young person who has questions or wants help with violence prevention in their community.   CA Johnson Sophomore Quinton Jones says he has seen his fair share of violence and wants to do his part to turn his community around.

"I want to go to the military or college. Maybe be a homicide detective or US Marshall," he says.

Jones says he feels that attending this week's meetings will help him better his community and also focus on his future.

Radio personality Michael Baisden from The Michael Baisden Show will be speaking out against violence at the Columbia Convention center tonight at 7:00.
