The Masters Golf Tournament kicks off at the Augusta National Golf Club in two weeks, and the Midlands businesses are already getting ready for the crowd. Columbia is about 70 miles from the course, but businesses say they still benefit from the event because people stay, play and eat here.
Oak Hills Golf Club Director Jeff Schaffer says they have more people playing golf around the time of the Masters. Many come in early to get in a few rounds before the tournament starts.
"It obviously almost doubles our play during those times," said Schaffer. "Everything is increased during that week."
The general manager for the downtown Columbia Hilton hotel Tony Tam says Midlands hotels are also packed with Masters visitors.
"We usually book up for the Masters right after the holidays, right after Christmas, " said Tam.
The 2010 Masters begins April 5 and goes through April 11.
