The Gamecocks led early couldn't hold on Wednesday night. USC dropped their final home game of the season Wednesday night to Alabama 79-70. It was the last home game for seniors Devan Downey, Brandis Raley-Ross, Evaldus Baniulis, Robert Wilder, and Dominique Archie. The seniors were honored before the game.
Downey had three steals during the game and became the all time steals leader in Gamecock history. Darrin Horn had praise for Downey's achievement.
"He's a guy that's really good at that. That's a hard thing to do," said Horn, "Guys that steal the way he does are guys that have a knack for it. He broke Chuck Eidson's record, and they're different built kind of guys, but guys that steal the basketball have great instinct and feel."
The Gamecocks started the game strong with an 11-0 run, and they led by as many as 14, but struggled to hold a lead the second half.
As the final seconds ticked away seniors Devan Downey and Brandis Raley-Ross were taken out of the game to a standing ovation and fans chanted Downey's name.
The Gamecocks (14-15, 5-10) will take on the Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday in Nashville in their SEC regular season finale. Game time is set for 2:00 PM. The game will be televised on ESPN2 and will air on the Gamecock Radio Network.
