Gamecock Fans Rush the Courtby Lee Scurry
The undefeated Kentucky Wildcats were expecting to continue their domination of college basketball against a mediocre South Carolina team Tuesday night.
That didn't happen.
The Gamecocks (12-8, 3-3 SEC) knocked off the top ranked Kentucky (19-1, 4-1 SEC) 68-62 as Gamecock fans exploded onto the court.
"I told you so," Gamecock Devan Downey screamed as he hugged whoever he could at the sound of the buzzer, according to GamecocksOnline.
Kentucky was the last unbeaten team in college basketball. The loss comes after President Barrack Obama called the Wildcat team to thank them for their help in raising support for Haiti and to congratulate them on their top ranking.
Gamecock Devan Downey led the South Carolina team to victory with 30 points to his name. Downey hit a 3 pointer with 4:06 left to play to give the Gamecocks the lead for good at 54-51.
Demarcus Cousins led the Kentucky Wildcats with 27 points—a career best for the player.
Wildcat John Wall, a NBA prospect and all-star freshmen on the Kentucky squad, hit a 3 point shot of his own with 40.1 seconds to go to bring Kentucky within reach of victory 62, 61. John Wall had 19 points in the game.
Brandis Raley-Ross of the Gamecocks restored the team's edge with two free throws. He finished the game with 17 points.
The victory over Kentucky was the Gamecocks first ever win against a number one team.
It comes after a disappointing loss to Florida this past Saturday. Gator Chandler Parsons hit a buzzer 3 point shot to win the game for Florida.
The Gamecocks get ready to face Georgia (9-9, 1-4 SEC) on Saturday, January 30th, at the Colonial Life Arena at 7:00pm.
