Sam along with his father and grand-fatherBy: Cat Arnaud
Fourth graders at A.C. Moore Elementary School expressed their gratitude to those who have served and fought for our freedom through songs this Veterans Day. But can a nine-year-old really understand these sacrifices?
Fourth grader Sam Morris Jr. does.
“Our veterans come out here and I like to serve them because they fought for us and helped us through everything,” little Sam says.
His dad fought in Iraq and his great-grandfather fought in World War Two. Sam was part of the show Tuesday morning and invited his favorite veterans to be honored.
“I think it’s important for schools to have events like this to show the veterans and the people who serve that they’re still proud of them and they haven’t given up faith,” United States National Guard Sergeant Sam Morris says.
And that’s exactly what these students did. They responded a call to honor our local veterans and to find out the true meaning of the red white and blue.
“What better way to bring in some of our veterans who have served in Vietnam, Korea, WWI, WWII, our current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and see that these are real people who are actually doing this everyday and protecting our country.” said A.C. Moore Principal Chantelle Baker-Parnell.
Sergeant Morris served in the military for seven years.
“Tomorrow I’m going to sit at home with my kids and my grandfather who fought in World War II,” Morris says.
And thinks his will to fight for his Country has rubbed off on little Sam.
“I want to be just like my daddy!” Sam exclaims.
But for now, Sam’s going to continue taking on the fourth grade, being his father’s biggest fan, and saluting to vets with his fellow forth graders for Veterans Day.
