Blakely Mattern Senior CaptainBy: Jill Perry
The South Carolina Women's Soccer team have still not been beaten this year. They have a record of 11-0-1. Sunday was the first time a team came close was when USC and Mississippi State were tied after double overtime.
Blakely Mattern, a senior captain on the team, says this season is a dream come true.
"The way that we've progressed in my four years to have this type of last season is really special," Mattern Said.
Mattern is one of seven seniors on the team. All the experience on the field is something head Coach Shelley Smith says has helped them get where they are.
"The experience that's in our line up, we have a group of seniors that have been starters for much of their career and have grown as players and that's what we are asking them in our team anyone that comes in our program to be the best player they can be when they graduate," Smith said.
She also says that the seniors do a great job of motivating the team.
Kim Miller is another senior captain. She takes the senior leadership responsibly seriously saying if the team has confidence in her she can have confidence in them.
"We do big things cause we are a great team we are one. We stay together you can tell when we are on the field how together we are," Miller said.
Mattern hopes this feeling lasts for as long as possible.
"I would like it to never end, but obviously that's not going to happen but obviously that's not going to happen but it's been awesome," Mattern added.
The seniors want to keep the momentum going and do something the program hasn't ever done before, win a SEC championship, and a National Title.
USC will be back in action this friday at 7 PM at Stone Stadium against the Auburn Tigers.
