As the Gamecocks get ready for Thurday's season opener against NC State, USC head coach Steve Spurrier says the team has improved over the offseason but young players need to step up.  One thing he wanted to avoid was talking big about the team.

" Well, we haven't really played yet, so we've got to go play. We're not talking big. We don't need to talk big. We need to earn our way as we go", Spurrier said.

The coach was joined at the press conference by seniors Eric Norwood and Moe Brown. The two emphasized how going out and winning games in the number one goal. Norwood even said that the isn't playing for anybody but themselves.

"We just want to go out there and win. Play ball, get better. That's all we want to do" Norwood said. "It doesn't matter if everybody else is watching. We're playing for us. We ain't playing for them."

Wide reciever Moe Brown talked about how getting the season off to a good start is the best way to show opponents that this team means business.

"You always want to go in with a good note going into Georgia, let them know they're going to have a game on their hands and we're not going to come down and lay down for anyone and that we can finish games", he said.

The Gamecocks hope to erase memories of last season where the team faded down the stretch and lost its bowl game. They know the best way to put that behind them is to start the 2009 season off with a win.
